Nutrition & Exercise
Nutrition:
Not only does eating affect our
bodies, but our minds as well. The central nervous system, the
brain and the spinal cord use the nutrition
we ingest to operate properly. The brain uses about 20% of our
blood sugar and neurotransmitters in the brain are made up from
dietary substances.
Exercise:
The most important type of exercise
that people need for health and well-being is regular
aerobic exercise - or high intensity, long-duration activities
that increase both heart rate and oxygen intake. Cardiovascular
and respiratory fitness are particularly valuable to psychological
well-being because they increase the amount of oxygen reaching
the brain, enhancing thinking and neurological functioning. As
well, many studies have tied regular exercise to improvements
in self-concept, self-esteem and well-being, as well as a reduction
in depression. Employee fitness programs have resulted in reduced
absenteeism, increased job satisfaction and lower healthcare costs.
